At the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo, the animal care staff actively provides their animals with enrichment. Enrichment can vary and it is provides a stimulating environment for the animals. Why does the animal care staff provide enrichment? For the same reasons parents provide newborns with colorful toys. Families give their dogs bones, children are fascinated by challenging toys and adults seek hobbies. Enrichment can keep animals busy, encourage natural instincts, distract from doing unwanted behaviors, or build motor skills. Enrichment can be done for any animal from insect to human and can also be in many forms that appeal to any of the animal’s senses.
“Environmental enrichment improves or enhances zoo environments for animals, stimulating them to investigate and interact with their surroundings. We enrich animal environments by making changes to structures in their enclosures, present novel objects and smells for them to investigate and explore, and by changing how we present food” says June Bellizzi, Assistant Director of Zoological Affairs.
Come visit CWPZoo Saturday July 14th from 11am – 3pm to learn how the animal care staff enriches the animals in their care, and even learn how you can contribute. The zoo will also be celebrating their Zoo Parents on this day. If you have adopted one of the animals or are interested in doing so, be sure to stop by. The Outpost Pavilion will be reserved for the wonderful Zoo Parents to enjoy light refreshments and have the opportunity to have their picture taken with a few of the education animals!
