African Lion

Having a "roaring" good time in 2008!

The Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo allows each guest to get as close to the animals as safety permits. To feel the vibrations from a lion’s roar or see the muscles in a jaguar’s legs as he prowls within his naturalistic habitat are just a few of the experiences that will bring you closer to the animal world.

Our Official Guide To The Zoo will provide all of the important information that you need to answer the questions that arise during your visit. Our helpful staff will be glad to give you more details about the Guide when you call to make a reservation.

These activities are free with your group admission:

  • Shows at Conservation Theater --  Daily shows begin April and are held at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. to accommodate our school groups.  Our Shows are fun, lively adventures with lots of opportunities to learn about and touch selected animals.
  • Encounters  - Scheduled every day between Memorial Day and Labor Day, visitors can get the "bear" facts, talk to a tiger and hug a giant snake.
  • Several "Meet the Keeper" times are also available throughout the day so you can get the inside scoop on how we care for our animal friends.
  • Petting Areas - Hand feed curious goats, donkeys, sheep, llamas and deer approved food. You can arrange for the animal food in advance and save.

For group reservations and additional information, call 301-271-3180, ext 11 or contact the Education Department.

Please book your field trip as soon as possible to get the best day and time. We limit the number of visitors each day to insure that your group gets the complete attention that it deserves.

If you can't come to us, we'll come to you with a live animal program at your school. School Programs are offered October 1 to April 1 and feature four different animals, actual animal biofacts, and always encourage children to touch the animals and ask questions.
